BANGOR SCHOOL GLENLOLA COLLEGIATE CRITICISED OVER TOILET RULES
In this section we are going to analyze an article on education that we can find on the BBC News page.
In this article we are written as a college, Glenlola Collegiate in Bangor has established a rule where there will only be free access restrooms before and after school and during recess and lunch time.
However, students who need to use the restroom during class must report to the front desk, where they then have access to one of the three handicap restrooms.
This new rule has attracted much criticism from families and students. Some describe it as an embarrassing act since a bathroom is not always used for the same. Mainly women, have a greater need to go and sometimes it is impossible to predict when to go to the bathroom.
Now we are going to read some testimonies from the students where they deal with issues with which this rule is identified, such as: 'Embarrassing' and 'Basic human right'.
"Closing main pupil toilets during class time is
common practice in many schools so we are not unique in this respect."
"Young girls and women use bathrooms for many
different reasons. They should be freely and openly accessible to them.
"I think using that language really is trying to shame people who are using it for different reasons."
From my point of
view, I am against this new rule. I believe that if they try to reduce the
students' going to the bathroom in this way, they are choosing bad strategies.
In the first place, it must be the teacher who sets the guidelines and permits
to go to the bathroom. On the other hand, change an attitude or need of the
students through an authoritarian norm or punishments could lead to problems in
the future, whether in their attitude or social presence.
