The news I have chosen is “Vikings settled in North America in 1021AD, study says.” This news come from the BBC news webpage world's section.
The reason I have chosen this news and not other is because if what it is said in this post is truly, maybe it will change the history, and also the importance of the Christopher Columbus discovery
I will begin with the headline's information from the post, which says Vikings had a settlement in the North American territory, one thousand years ago, which this is centuries before Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas.
The specialist who has developed this discover is Dr Colleen Batey. He is a Viking specialist, and also he is a professor in the Institute for Northern Studies in Scotland. He had analysed some rests of trees, which were probably been cut by these Vikings, who were settled at L'Anse aux Meadows. This scientist had analysed these rests of wood using an atmospheric radiocarbon signal. This signal was produced by a dated solar storm in 1021. So, the solar storm is very important because it allows scientist to collect data from those cut trees.
After analysing these cut trees, they have realized that they were modified by metal tools. This data, has helped to study more territories which probably were also arrived by Vikings.
Finally, scientist and some authors say the discovery will be very influential because it will help to understand the past. Furthermore, it can really change the influences of some popular people such as Christopher Columbus thought the history.
To finish with this post, I must say that if what it is said in this post is totally truly, maybe as teachers we should give the merit of the America discovery to the Vikings and not to Columbus. What do you think?
