TED TALK: SHOULD UNIVERSITY EDUCATION BE FREE? (DAVID)

Hi everyone, in this post you will be able to see what will be the schedule I'm going to follow doing my TED TALK. Here, there are the mains aspects of the topic I have chosen to do “Should university education be free”, and also there is my personal opinion which will summarize the main ideas of this post.

In Spain, and in Europe, the cost of the college isn't too high. However, this cost in other countries like the USA is rising. This over-cost education, is making students facing financial constraints when it comes to attending college, making some of them have a big debt to pay to the college institution.

Going to a college requires spending some money from your pocket. This collides with the article 26 of the declaration of the human rights. The 26 article said, “Everyone has the right to education. Education shall be free, at least in the elementary and fundamental stages. … Education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.”. After reading this, I consider college as another education stage, because it helps you to continue developing yourself personally and academically. So the government should help students economically.

Apart from the declaration of the human rights, there are also some reasons which are in favour of the non-debt education. These reasons are related with the improvement of the society, the widened workforce, the boosting of the economy, the increment of the equality, and the upgrade of the students focusing.

Firstly, university should be free for all, because it improves society. If more people are better educated, they would be able to solve problems better. So the society would also progress faster. In addition, people with education know more about the history, and the economy of their country, so they will be able to help it more. In brief, if more people have access to a college education, their skills will be increased, and they will be able to join the workforce.

Secondly, if our people are more educated, we will have a widened workforce. Nowadays, there are much more works which use automatic machines, so people are getting unemployed. To solve this, new generations need to achieve analytical skills, and also creativity thinking abilities. These skills are necessary because people need to be retrained and taught skills for the new jobs.

Thirdly, there is no doubt if University would be free it would boost our economy. There are so many students who have a lot of debt in their studies. That don't allow them moving Forward, delaying them on buying things like a car, or a house. Otherwise, people without debt would stimulate the economy because they will spend more, thanks to the higher demand in the workforce. Finally, having debt cause students bad behaviours related with their mental state. And without these weights of the debs, they will be able to feel more relaxed, but also more motivated facing their academic course. Education is essential for the development of services in a country, which is key to increasing productivity Romer, 1986).

Free University education will affect directly on the equality of the society members. This equality will be increased because most of the people will have a complete education. Also, this equality will change the different types of the social status, making them being more equal, deleting social classes like low or high-social classes, and making them being more mid-social class. Finally, it's important to reach the equality because if we reach it, not only we will be equal in rights, we will be also equal in opportunities... Free education should be analyzed as the path we must follow to promote equity and social mobility (Espinoza and González, 2016)

Finally, there is one last reason in favour of free university education. We talked later about the different types of behaviour students can have studying a degree, knowing them that they have a big economic debt. Being totally focused is important to pass all the degree exams, but also to learn knowledge. That's why, if we have and academic debt, we cannot be totally focused, and those distractions can make us fail, avoiding us giving the full of our academic capacities.

Now, I’m going to show you some information  taken from an article called “Analysis of the implementation of free education at the University of Atacama”. This article was written by Burgos.C, Oña.A, and Castillo.W, and it shows some academic results and also the consequences of the implementation of a university without economic debds.

In the article, one of the consequences of the insertion of free education in Chile was the improving of the quality of their life's inhabitants. So, education become the main factor to reduce these problems. (OECD, 2018).

They have much more benefits apart from the free access, they have also scholarships, loans and own funds.

In conclusion Burgos.C, Oña.A and Castillo.W say that if we want to reach a higher education is necessary to reach a good productive, social, and economics levels, which will boost the development of the country.
