ARTICLE SUMMARY (SAMUEL)

UNIVERSITIES TARGET POOR STUDENTS FOR GETTING THEM GOOD JOBS

Universities will have to hit hard targets to ensure the poorest students get into high-paid jobs after they graduate, under new government plans.

According to this article, the UK government and the Universities Minister Michelle Donelan had send a message to vice-chancellors to rewrite accesses and participation plans of students (which do every five years).

Why does this happen? Apparently, a study shows that the most selective universities don't help their poorer students in earning more. The analysis showed that the percentage of poor students (a 2%) weren't given economic help.

In my opinion, any student that ingresses in an university should be given at least a monthly/semestral help, especially those with are poorer. That happens in my case, for example: I'm paying the university subjects via monthly scholarships during the first semester. Some of the payments can even reach roughly the 500€, which is a lot for my family to pay.

In addition, although the article talks about school meals (which I think the students which require it should also get some for free), I think another payment to consider are the bus tickets for those who came from outside. For example, those students who came to study from Zaragoza spend in bus travels like 20€ per day in the round trip. I think they should get also some economical helps, giving them at least a "student discount", which consists on lowering the daily payment in a 50%.

That's why I consider for the university to send, at least each semester, an economic help for those students who can't afford to pay the subjects they are doing. Not to mention the non-passed subjects need to be paid next year, and the prizes increase.
