HOMESCHOOLING

WHAT HOMESCHOOLING IS?

It is estimated that in Spain there are between 2,000 and 4,000 families that educate their children at home, according to the European Network of Home Education. When we read this we think about how parents, private teachers and especially the students develop the day to day.

We are mainly going to see what this term means that its influence increases more and more. The term homeschooling is to educate a child outside of educational institutions to do it at home, or a space, by the hand of a teacher or a tutor and with a legal study plan.

As we mentioned at the beginning, in Spain it is a more common practice every day. Homeschooling in Spain is in an unlawful state, as it does not have an exclusive legal regulation and faces contradictions. Furthermore, it has many implications.

Next, we are going to detail several points in favor through this method and against it, we will mention negative points.

On the one hand, we find several advantages such as the ones we are going to list. First is a personalized education. In this case, the child will receive 100% attention. There is greater participation and adaptability. Since the process is personalized and does not require adaptation to a specific group, the teacher can focus each class taking into account the abilities of the student. In this way, the learning process will be much more profitable, and even take less time. Time flexibility and interaction with people of different ages. By being in contact with people of various ages, the child's process can be significantly enriched, from a personal and academic point of view. The students in turn carry out extracurricular activities, once the proposed study plan is finished, the program can be extended to other areas that are of the student's personal interest.

Finally we would like to highlight three important advantages: Strengthening of family ties. This methodology is developed in a family environment, which creates an opportunity to consolidate affective relationships within the home and strengthen ties with the family nucleus, without generating dependencies or toxic relationships. There is no need for travel or competition. The child will not have the pressure that exists in the classroom to stand out from other peers. Additionally, the student will not be at risk of suffering from bullying or the famous bullying.

On the other hand, we find disadvantages that make us wonder if this methodology really works 100%.

We find a lack of social contact. This is one of the most noted disadvantages of homeschooling, since the lack of interaction with other children in the school environment can lead to problems. Less opportunities to meet diversity. The child will not have access to other ways of thinking, which will reduce his ability to understand different points of view. Problems with sociability. By developing a solitary process, it will be more difficult for the child to interact with the world in any setting, not just academic. Lack of autonomy and independence and Difficulty in group work. In any environment, group work is a fundamental aspect and school is the perfect training to develop the ability to understand other opinions, discuss issues and organize work. So the lack of interaction will delay the development of this skill. and finally we see a lack of external supervision. Home schooling can pose risks of abuse, indoctrination or isolation for the little one.

Once we have seen all these points, we would like to ask you, the readers, what do you think about homeschooling?
